UN Reports Record Number of Refugees Fleeing Syrian Conflict

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), "the number of refugees fleeing Syria "rose sharply in August, with 103,416 people seeking asylum in surrounding countries. It was the highest monthly total of the Syria crisis to date and brought the total number of Syrian refugees registered or awaiting registration to more than 235,300."
The main organizations who are assisting refugees include UNHCR, UNICEF, Save the Children, and theInternational Committee of the Red Cross/Red Crescent. UNICEF reports that children make up more than half of the refugees in the Zataari refugee camp in Jordan.

Status Report:
On February 26, 2013, The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres told the Security Council on Wednesday that the number of registered refugees that have fled violence in Syria will reach one million within a month, warning that a "moment of truth" is approaching where the humanitarian community's capacity to provide assistance will reach its limit.
As of November 5, 2012, UNHCR reports that there are 296, 940 Syrian refugees living in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and Iraq, the vast majority of whom are women and children.
As of late August, 2012, UNICEF reports that there are more than 19,000 people residing in a Jordanian refugee camp, with more arriving daily.
